Norfolk Southern's Saluda Grade
Jim Tenefrancia’s permanent n-scale layout is
based on Norfolk Southern’s A-S line over Saluda Grade and the W
Line into the loops at Old Fort N.C. This large, garage-size layout,
also models various towns along the right of way.

Brief History
Saluda Grade is the steepest standard-gauge mainline
railway grade in the United States. Located in Polk County, North
Carolina, it consists of a three-mile section of track that rises over 600
feet in elevation with a highest official grade of 4.7% but reaching
5.1% at one point between the towns of Melrose and Saluda. Norfolk
Southern suspended freight traffic over Saluda Grade between Landrum,
South Carolina and Flat Rock, North Carolina, in December 2001. All
photographs have been provided by Jared Davis.
