Railfan Pictures of the Day - 05/15/2008

CSX Bethlehem Branch Lansdale Yard Lansdale PA May 10 2008

May 10 2008 was National Train Day. Where were you?

John Almeida drove the 2 miles to Lansdale Yard to see an unusual sight for these parts. Normally the domain of ex-Conrail SD40-2's, GP38-2's and GP40-2's due to SEPTA cab signal requirements, earlier this month CSX found itself short of big iron to send up. During the first week of May, a quartet of four axles held down both C746 transfer and B738/B745 local jobs. When one of the four axles had to be shopped, a surprise visitor in the form of CSX SD60I 8728 got the call.
As if unusual were the theme, the second unit was CSX GP38-2 2746 but facing north as well as 8728, requiring C746 to run long hood forward into town.
In the spirit of the Spirit designations, 2746 has been dubbed "The Spirit of Ivydale", the former name for the interchange with the New Hope and Ivyland Railroad.
On the other end was GP40-2 4423 in Dark Future and also pointing north. The next night the C746 crew would take everything except 8728 back into town.
