Railfan Pictures of the Day - 06/06/2008

North Wales PA June 4 2008

The reconstruction of the Market-Frankford El in West Philadelphia has been ongoing for years, and they are finally nearing completion. The pre-fabricated portions of the project are built in Falls Township near Morrisville PA and trucked to their destination. Pictures from a portion of one such run back in 2006 can be found here.

Now, probably due to road construction, they have detoured at least the last few pieces through the tiny borough of North Wales. First, a little background about the area. The Montgomeryville PA post office does not have the facilities to support home mail delivery, so that chore is divided among the surrounding post offices. As a result, the Montgomery Mall was assigned to North Wales, and there are many stories of tractor trailers looking to make a delivery and trying to navigate the narrow streets and tight turns of North Wales in a futile attempt to find the mall. So seeing something like this is surprising...
Crossing under the wires and over the SEPTA Main Line just south of the station.
Coming south on Morris Road and heading back onto the prescribed route at Route 202.
I notice that the previous piece had the metal portion painted blue, and this is one was white, and wondering if they have changed the color of the El or painting them on site.
