Railfan Pictures of the Day - 11/11/2010

SEPTA Route 15 Frankford Avenue Philadelphia PA November 7 2010

On weekdays, a small army of SEPTA employees and equipment has been toiling down on Frankford Avenue for more than a month, putting in the first "new" trolley rail in years. Here it is Sunday morning and while the Sugar House Casino, which is behind the camera and the destination for the new track, is open for business, for the construction it is a day of rest.
The view behind the camera shows the intersection of Delaware and Frankford Avenues and the entrance to the casino, but soon it will also feature a trolley loop, which will be the termination point of the Route 15 trolleys while Richmond Street is under construction as part of the I-95 project.
The use of the term "new" rail is relative, as during the excavation of the street, a previous incarnation of a trolley line, complete with rails and cobblestones, is being unearthed. The single track ran to Delaware Avenue and had not seen revenue service since the 1920's when it was PRT's Route 59, although it was used by work cars to access PRT-owned piers along the river into the mid-1950's.
Looking southeast from Girard Avenue, the old roadway has been removed and the rail for the first block has been positioned.
At the intersection of Girard and Frankford Avenues, the new turnouts are being laid.
