New Hope and Ivyland Branch Warminster PA and SEPTA Warminster Branch Hatboro PA
May 15 2011
|In preparation for the special train from Willow Grove to New Hope in celebration of Willow Grove's Tricentennial, SEPTA sent its genset SPAX 70 up to Warminster so that on the run between Warminster and Willow Grove, 70 could act as a big cab signal box. The early bets were on ex-Conrail and Norfolk Southern C39-8 8212 to make the run south, but it was decided otherwise.
|It would seem that the pinch-hitting leader, ex-Pennsylvania Railroad and Conrail GP30 2198, is without cab signals.
|GP30 2198 had departed New Hope with the seven cars and picked up former Conrail and Norfolk Southern C39-8 8211 in Ivyland. The recently refurbished engine still had its cab signal equipment, so it was ok for the trip north.
|After coupling up to the excursion train, they waited just north of Street Road, prepared to follow ...
|Train 431 (departing Warminster at 11:41) ...
|which it did closely behind.
For the rest of the story ....
The train departed right on time at 12:30 and made it all the way to the signal at Willow Grove North before being held for the next southbound, Train 435. Upon resuming the trip north at 12:50, they stopped at Warminster where Genset 70 was uncoupled and parked for the rest of the afternoon, and the train continued up to New Hope. However, on the trip back, 2198 shut down with the train just out of New Hope. 8211 pushed the train to Warminster where 70 was again coupled up for the return to Willow Grove There 70 was cut off for the last time and journeyed back to its home, Wayne Electric, and the excursion train headed back north for the last time.
