SEPTA Route 23 Germantown Avenue Chestnut Hill Trolley November 28 2003
In what has become a tradition, the sound of steel wheels on steel rails returns to the hill, if only for one day. Sponsored by the Chestnut Hill Business Association, the much beloved Chestnut Hill Trolley returned to usher in the holiday shopping season on Black Friday. Unfortunately, one of the two trolleys selected for the service, PCC 2785 painted in the green and cream PTC scheme with Chestnut Hill Trolley logos, suffered mechanical problems and spent most of the day at the Germantown Depot. But PCC 2728, a 1947 St. Louis car painted in the silver and blue PTC scheme, picked up the slack and carried Santa and many happy passengers on the Route 23 line between the end of the line at Bethlehem Pike and the Germantown Depot in Mount Airy. The trip through the depot turned out to be a highlight (or lowlight) as we got a glimpse of many older pieces of equipment that have seen much better days. Hopefully, some of them may roll again. To that end, The Friends of Philadelphia Trolleys is a group whose mission is "to foster the restoration, operation, and preservation of historic trolley cars in Philadelphia". Their goals are modest; the first is to raise funds to repaint PCC 2168 in its 1970's "Gulf Oil" colors. If you would like to help, consider joining them.

PCC 2728 may be in need of a new coat of paint but it can still pull its weight.
