Railfan Pictures of the Week - 1/04/2004

CSX and SEPTA Lansdale Yards Lansdale PA January 3 2004

The night crew on the CSX local job in Lansdale usually leaves the power light on one of the yard tracks, to keep it out of the way of the C746 transfer run that comes up from Philadelphia Sunday through Thursday nights. On Friday, they instead left us a train for the weekend, a rather common one in most respects, but for many the interesting parts are in the details. At first glance it is just a couple of CSX GP40-2's with a couple Railboxes sandwiched in between.

A quick look at CSX 6056 and 6062 shows how different two units just 6 spots apart on the roster can be. Details like the weathering, grafitti and GPS unit on the long hood of 6056 are the kind of thing modelers appreciate in order to make each unit look distinctive.
The Railboxes, as common as coachroaches and just as successful, are a study in old versus new. An interesting addition to RBOX 38076 are the three strips of Scoth-Lite on the sill, which according to proposed FRA regulations will become mandatory on all freight cars.

On the other side of the parking lot is the SEPTA MU layover yard, where cars are stored over nights and weekends in anticipation of the morning rush hour trains. SEPTA was nice enough to leave a variety this holiday weekend. St. Louis built Silverliner III 233, Budd built Silverliner II 201 and GE built Silverliner IV 168 will wait here until Monday.
They even lined them up for photographs.
