The new alignment of Richmond Street has been open for vehicular traffic since November 23 2015, but the trolleys will have to wait a couple more years before they return. Here is the new curve at Ann Street where it will duck under I-95 to return to the old tracks.
The light posts are nice, but no trolley wires or poles yet.
The I-95 Project continues, but the most recent press release made no mention of the return of the trolleys.
The press release did mention the three new railroad bridges that replaced the previous bridges, but not this new pedestrian bridge that will connect the Port Richmond neighborhood to the new park and trail along the river. The once bustling port complex that stretches from Beach Street north to Allegheny Avenue along the river and runs about a block wide inland for almost a mile has mostly been reclaimed by nature (deer have even been spotted crossing at this spot), and the area would make a beautiful inner-city park.
The entire I-95 project is slated for completion in 2020. The last press release that mentioned the trolley was back in 2010, and said the detour would last "approximately two years beginning in 2011" and that "Route 15 Trolley service will be rerouted along Frankford Avenue to a new turn-around that will be built on Delaware Avenue near Shackamaxon Street". The most recent update in January 2016 has the detour running until at least 2018, with the trolley tracks, poles and wires replaced as part of the widening of Richmond Street between Ann Street and the loop at Westmoreland Street, beginning later 2016/early 2017.
