HO Mod SIG Specifications, Recommendations & Tips

In addition to the NMRA Module standards and recommended practices, we have our own specifications.

Gauge (scale) HO (1/87)
Dimensions L=48" W=30"
Height from floor to top of cork 40"
Rail code for mainline 100 (.100")
Interface track center lines from module front 5" and 7"
Track setback from end of module 4-1/2"
Center lines on curves 2-1/2"
Track centers for paralled (double) track 2"
Backdrop height 16"
Plexiglass height 12" minimum

  • The standard dimensions are 30" deep by 4' long. (A few are 36" deep and the length may be longer but should be divisible by 4').
  • The height is *40" as measured from top of cork roadbed.
  • The track setback from the front edge is 5" and 7" (centerline of the two required mainline tracks). This only applies to the mating ends of the module. If you have more than one module that always go together, then only the ends that mate with other modules must meet this standard.
  • The setback at each mating end is an exact 4 1/2 "(better slightly too long than too short). Standard 9" straight tracks are used to bridge between modules and are supplied by the module owner plus two.
  • The track gaps are of the insulated type (no air gaps). All crossovers and tracks leading from the main lines shall have both rails insulated.
  • Modules are held together by clamps, usually 4" C clamps or medium Quick clamps. Provide at least one more than the number of your modules.
  • The leg length is calculated so that the table height can be adjusted between 39" and 41". A 5/16 X 18 tee-nut and a 5/16 X 3" elevator bolt are used for leveling.
  • All visible wood surfaces (front, back, back of backboard and legs) of the module should be painted semi-gloss black. We usually can provide black paint.
  • A backdrop is recommended usually of 3/8" plywood (birch or MDO). The height should be 16" above the cork roadbed. Check with us for updates. Please use our sky blue paint. Most people now fasten it to the back with screws or clamps.
  • A Plexiglas front is highly recommended.
  • At shows a skirt with loop Velcro is supplied by the module group for the front of the module.
