Radio Use

For basic radio use, please follow these protocols.

  1. After being assigned a radio check in with the dispatcher(s) for a radio check.
  2. Ask dispatcher for permission to enter main (inside or outside).
  3. After permission is granted and you are on the assigned main let the dispatcher know that the switches are clear and set for mainlines.
  4. If asked by the dispatcher where you are answer promptly.
  5. Keep all unnecessary talk to a minimum.
  6. If you have a derail or breakaway inform the dispatcher at once so that he can stop any other trains on your track.
  7. Once you are ready to get under way inform dispatcher and wait for permission to move.
  8. Be sure to be attentive to all that is being said on the radio (do not get involved in a long conversation and forget about your train).
  9. If someone wants to talk to you, tell them that you have to pay attention to your train and that you will get back to them when you are free to talk.
  10. Do not try and talk on the radio at the same time as some one else as then nothing gets thru.
  11. Do not keep informing the dispatcher as to your location or any small problems as the airway need to be kept clear.
