Child hurt after darting in front of trolley

A Port Authority trolley operator slammed on the brakes when an 11 year old boy darted onto the tracks Friday in Beechview, sparing the boy serious injury, authorities said.

Port Authority spokeswoman Judi McNeil said the boy crossed between an outbound Penn Park shuttle and an inbound trolley on Broadway Avenue at Bousted Street at about 5:30 p.m. The boy was struck by the trolley's front coupler.

McNeil said the accident delayed inbound traffic for 20 minuets. Neither the operator nor the child was identified.

McNeil said the boy suffered scrapes and bruises and was taken to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, Oakland. A hospital spokeswoman said he was released last night after treatment in the emergency room.
