A westbound BNSF freight derailed on the diamond with the Iowa Interstate at Colona, IL on November 21, 2003. Once the track was cleared and before a switch
was installed, several IAIS trains used BNSF rails between Barstow and Peoria, via Galesburg, while 2 trains ran between Barstow and Joliet, via Galesburg and the ex-ATSF mainline.
Once the switch was installed, the long-haul detours stopped. For approximately 8 months, the IAIS detoured through Barstow on BNSF rails between Colona and East Moline. Two switches
have been installed at Colona for the IAIS. The diamond is now history. Here are several views of the IAIS on the BNSF between East Moline and Colona:
