Management

Company Officials

Over the span of years from 1897 until 1986 a large number of people came and went from managerial positions and directorships with the railroad. These people include: the founders of the New Orange Industrial Association and its successor the Kenilworth Realty Corporation, Louis Keller as well as his friends and family, men in the railroad securities industry, lawyers representing various estates and trusts, local men, day to day management of the railroad, employees of the railroad, as well as a few others.

The Board of Directors met yearly at the Kenilworth Station (in later years) in either February or March. The "day to day" management would let the Board know of the condition of the railroad at present. Management consisted of Horatio F. Dankel (1900-1913), James S. Caldwell (1913-1919), Robert H. England (1919-1920), Roger A. Clark (1920-1932), George A. Clark (1932-1969), Robert G. Clark (1969-1975), and Bernard J. Cahill (1975-1986). These men had total control over the day to day operations of the railroad. The Board of Directors was only called upon for large purchases - such as the purchase of a locomotive - or other issues.

The law firm of Beekman & Bogue, which after 1922 represented the interests of Louis Keller's heirs and other shareholders, would make a once a year visit to the railroad to check on things.

AFFILIATION KEY

NEW ORANGE INDUSTRIAL ASSOCIATON
These were the men from Elmira, NY who founded the New Orange Industrial Association in 1894, the New York & New Orange Railroad in 1897, the New Orange Four Junction Railroad in 1901, and primary financiers and crediters of the new Rahway Valley Railroad after 1907.

LOCAL INVESTORS
Several men from the area in which the railroad operated also invested in the railroad. Such men included Nicholas C. J. English, Dennis Long, etc

DAY TO DAY MANAGEMENT
This includes the General Managers and Superintendents that oversaw the day to day management of the railroad such as H. F. Dankel, J. S. Caldwell, R. H. England, the Clark family, and Bernard J. Cahill.

LOUIS KELLER AND FAMILY
Louis Keller was the principle promotor of the Rahway Valley Railroad upon its founding in 1904. After his death in 1922 many shares of stock were left to members of his family.

KENILWORTH REALTY CORPORATION
Men associated with the successor corporation of the New Orange Industrial Assosciation, the Kenilworth Realty Corp. Some of these men were holdovers from the New Orange Industrial Association.

FRIENDS OF KELLER
Several of Keller's friends and associates found their way into the Rahway Valley RR corporate saga. Many of these men were also members of the Baltusrol Golf Club.

RAILROAD SECURITIES HOLDERS
Railroad investment was a big business back then. A few men from this business took part in the Rahway Valley RR. Such men included H. Montague Vickers and John R. Franke.

LAWYERS
After the deaths of several crediters/stockholders lawyers were often appointed to seats on the Board of Directors to represent the interests of their clients' estates. In the 1920's the firm of Stanchfield, Collin, Lovell, & Sons of Elmira, NY represented the interests of the estates of Ray Tompkins and Matthias H. Arnot, primary crediters of the railroad. Later, after the death of Louis Keller, the law firm of Beekman & Bogue of New York, NY represented Keller's estate and his heirs.

RAILROAD EMPLOYEES
Occasionally people who actually worked for the railroad served on the Board of Directors such as Matthias O. Mitchell (Kenilworth Station Agent) and Carl Nees (Master Mechanic).

MISCELLANEOUS
Anyone else not classified such as John N. H. Cornell who was the contractor who built the railroad.

Note: Single share stockholders are often noted as being holders of "qualifying shares." A qualifying share is a share of stock issued so that a person
may serve on the Board of Directors or in a managerial position. The share acts no different than a share of common stock.
