Grade Crossing: Rutgers Street

This view shows the Rutgers Street grade crossing. Menner Packing is seen directly ahead.

Rutgers Street was the only crossing the Rahway Valley Line made at grade. The roadway itself was constructed after the railroad was built through the area, as a 1928 Sanborn Map as well as a 1931 aerial do not show the crossing. The grade crossing was removed in 1973, as a part of the branch line's abandonment between Hollywood Memorial Park in Union and the end of track in Maplewood. No trace of the crossing is noticeable today.
