Ayr TMD

Location: Between Newton-On-Ayr and Ayr stations. On the east side of the line immediately south of Newton-On-Ayr station.

Allocation: N/A

Usual Classes: 08, 37, 56, 60

Vantage Points: 1) From Newton-On-Ayr station go straight ahead into Falkland Park Road. Turn right into Prestwick Road and continue to the road bridge over the line. To the left of this bridge is a second pedestrian bridge where the depot can be viewed with binoculars.

2) From Newton-On-Ayr station go straight ahead into Falkland Park Road. Turn right into Prestwick Road then left into McCall's Avenue. Immediately after crossing the railway turn right into Somerset Road then right onto an un-named track after Ayr United Football Club. The depot is at the end of this road.

3) Follow the directions for the depot entrance (see note 2) but before Ayr Football ground opposite the foundry and just after the railway bridge there is a patch of wasteland bordering the depot which is used as a car park. The depot can be viewed from the bottom of the car park. This is assumed to be private property although no one has ever challenged me here.

Craigentinny TRSMD, Edinburgh

Location: On the south side of the ECML to the east of Edinburgh Waverley.

Allocation: 08

Usual Classes: 08, 43, 47, 91, LHCS

Vantage Points: From A1 (South) continue straight on (passing over ECML) towards Portobello into A199 "Sir Harry Lauder Road." At the next roundabout turn left into A1140 Portobello Road. Take 4th turning on the left - a narrow road called "Fish Wives' Causeway" - depot / main line can be viewed over the wall from this road with binoculars.

Fort William LIP

Location: The depot is on the east side of the Mallaig line, north of Fort William station.

Allocation: N/A

Usual Classes: 08, 37, Steam locomotives (summer only)

Vantage Points: The depot can be best viewed with binoculars from the top of the highest hill overlooking the yard which has a monument on top. The freight marshalling yard, the sidings into Alcan works and movements on both passenger lines can be viewed from here as well (if it's not too wet / misty).

Inverness TMD

Location: Situated in the triangle to the north of Inverness station bounded by the lines to Perth / Aberdeen, Far North lines and the station avoiding line.

Allocation: 08, DMU

Usual Classes: 08, 37, 47, DMU, LHCS

Vantage Points: The depot can be partially viewed from the platforms at Inverness station and from the Far North line.

Millerhill LIP

Location: The depot is at the north end of Millerhill yard on the freight only Edinburgh avoiding line.

Allocation: N/A

Usual Classes: 08, 09, 37, 47, 56, 60, 66

Vantage Points: 1) From A1 (South) take junction with A6095 Newcraighall Road in a westerly direction, and then turn left towards a new shopping centre into Whitehall Road. Continue along this road to the end (about 1 mile) - passing over the railway - the depot entrance is on the right. At present the depot can be viewed with binoculars from an adjacent coal yard if there are no diggers etc. working. 

**WARNING - The coal yard you describe is PRIVATE / RAILWAY PROPERTY and often 'visited' by police , usually after a tip off from the security guards who
are always on duty.**

2) From Musselburgh station turn right and walk approximately 1/4 of a mile along a footpath. Follow the path round to the left alongside the dual carriageway then turn left under the dual carriageway at the subway. Carry on along the footpath to the end where it comes out by the road bridge over the freight only line to the North of Millerhill yard.

3) At the beginning of the overbridge ( before the depot entrance ) step over
the wire fencing ( there used to be a style here , but was never put back
after workmen had dug up the embankment ) this is a public right of way (
as far as a small road ) . walk along the top of the embankment , until you
come to a broken away fence ( used as a motorcross track , unofficially , )
here climb up the hillside onto the top of the ' bing ' , this was the site
of the old Monktonhall colliery but is now just wasteland . From here a
good view can be made of one side of the depot as well as the entire yard (
very like Toton ) . One should not go down into the wooded area as although
wasteland is still railway property and treated as such by police and
railway staff alike .

Mossend Yard

Location: On both sides of the Motherwell to Coatbridge line.

Allocation: N/A

Usual Classes: 08, 37, 56, 60, 66, 89, 90, 92

Vantage Points: 1) The yard can be viewed from passenger trains passing through the yard between Motherwell and Cumbernauld.

2) The yard / train movements can be viewed down a short driveway off the A775 Holytown Road next to the bridge over the main railway line. Binoculars useful. The loco. Stabling point can also be viewed at the end of another driveway "Cardean Road." - traveling towards Holytown, take the first turn on the left after the railway bridge, pass a scrap yard on the left and continue straight on up a small hill and over a level crossing (new single track line into distribution warehouse).

Motherwell TMD

Location: On the west side of the Motherwell to Coatbridge line, just north of Motherwell station.

Allocation: 08, 37, 47

Usual Classes: 08, 37, 47, 56, 66

Vantage Points: 1) The depot can be viewed from trains traveling between Motherwell and Cumbernauld.

2) Turn left outside Motherwell station into Muir street. Cross over the road and the depot can be viewed from the bridge crossing the railway to Cumbernauld and from turning right into the industrial estate. The depot can viewed from the B&Q car park and from the road which follows the depot boundary.
