Below is a list of depots located on the former London Midland Region in alphabetical order. The list is not complete and will be added to in due course.


Bescot TMD

Location: At the west end of Bescot Yard adjacent to Bescot Stadium station.

Allocation: 08, 37

Usual Classes: 08, 31, 37, 47, 56, 58, 60, 66

Vantage Points: The depot is visible from Bescot Stadium station. The rear of the depot can be viewed by leaving the station by the footbridge. Proceed straight ahead along the path which follows the railway then over the first bridge alongside the M6. Cross over the second footbridge over the line to Wolverhampton. Turn 180 degrees after crossing this second footbridge and follow the path alongside the railway back towards Bescot. This path comes out on a road. Turn left and follow the road to the entrance of the depot.

Carlisle Holding Sidings

Location: Adjacent to Carlisle station.

Allocation: N/A

Usual Classes: 08, 37, 56, 60, 66, 87, 90

Vantage Points: The holding sidings can be viewed from the far west platform at Carlisle station (platform 8 ?).

Chester DMUD

Location: On the east side of the line to Birkenhead and Liverpool

Allocation: N/A

Usual Classes: 101, 142, 150, 153, 156, 158

Vantage Points: The depot can be viewed from trains leaving Chester traveling to Liverpool and North Wales

Chester WRD
- Currently Closed

Location: West of Chester station next to the line to North Wales.

Allocation: N/A

Vantage Points: Can be seen from trains leaving Chester station traveling west to North Wales

Crewe Diesel Depot

Location: Immediately south of Crewe station on the west side of the WCML.

Allocation: 08, 09, 37, 47, 57, 66

Usual Classes: 08, 09, 37, 47, 56, 57, 66

Vantage Points: The north end of the depot can be viewed from the south end of platform 12 at Crewe station. The depot is also partially visible from trains on the WCML and the Shrewsbury line.

Crewe Holding Sidings

Location: Next to Crewe Diesel Depot south of Crewe station.

Allocation: N/A

Usual Classes: 08, 09, 37, 47, 56, 57, 86, 90

Vantage Points:
1) From trains passing along the WCML south of Crewe station and from the Shrewsbury line.
2) From the south end of platform 12, Crewe station.
3) Turn right outside Crewe station into Nantwich Road then right at the roundabout. The sidings can be viewed from the wasteland on the right.

Crewe International Electric Maintenance Depot

Location: On the south side of the line between Crewe and Chester.

Allocation: 86, 87, 90, 92, 325

Usual Classes: 08, 86, 87, 90, 92, 325

Vantage Points: The depot is partially visible from trains passing along the Crewe - Chester line.

Visit Permits: Not Issued


Euston Station Stabling Point

Location: Locomotives are stabled in the roads at the west side of Euston station

Allocation: N/A

Usual Classes: 86, 87, 90

Vantage Points: The stabled locomotives can be viewed from the platforms.

Visit Permits: N/A


Etches Park, Derby

Location: To the east of Derby station on the north side of the Spondon / Leicester line.

Allocation: 08

Usual Classes: 08, 43, 47, LHCS

Vantage Points: The depot can be viewed from trains passing. On leaving Derby station the depot is immediately to your left (facing forward).

Holyhead CS

Location: Immediately south of Holyhead station.

Allocation: N/A

Vantage Points: The sidings can be viewed from the station or from the road to the south which can be accessed from the station footbridge.

Holyhead LIP

Location: On the North side of the line just after leaving Holyhead station.

Allocation: N/A

Usual Classes: 37, 47, DMU

Vantage Points: The depot can be viewed by trains entering or leaving Holyhead station. Nothing usually stables at the depot during the daytime.

Leicester LIP

Location: To the north of Leicester station on the east side of the Derby line.

Allocation: N/A

Usual Classes: 58, 60, 66

Vantage Points: Leave Leicester station by the footbridge at the North end of the platforms and walk across the car park. Turn right out of the car park then cross the main road which crosses the railway. On the other side of the road is a footpath with leads into a private road which leads into an industrial estate, the depot and main line can be viewed from this lane.

Llandudno Junction Yard

Location: To the south of Llandudno Junction station.

Allocation: N/A

Usual Classes: 37, DMU

Vantage Points: The yard can be viewed from platform 4 of Llandudno Junction station.

Visit Permits: N/A


Preston Station

Location: Sidings are located in the confines of Preston station where locomotives and DMU's regularly stable until their next turn of duty.

Allocation: N/A

Usual Classes: 47, 86, DMU

Vantage Points: The sidings can be viewed from the platforms at Preston station.

Visit Permits: N/A


Rugby Holding Sidings

Location: To the north of Rugby station on the east side of the WCML. Locomotives also sable in the bay platforms at Rugby Station.

Allocation: N/A

Usual Classes: 08, 37, 47, 56, 58, 66

Vantage Points:  
1) The sidings can be viewed from trains on the WCML and Birmingham lines.
2) Leave the station and head northwards along the station approach road, turn right at the first road, and then right again into the estate. The loco's and rolling stock present can be viewed from the various car parks throughout the estate.

Saltley LIP

Location: The depot is on the east side of the Birmingham to Nuneaton / Tamworth line.

Allocation: N/A

Usual Classes: 08, 09, 37, 47, 58, 60, 66

Vantage Points:
1) The depot can be viewed from passing trains to / from Birmingham Nuneaton and Tamworth.
2) Turn right out of Duddeston station and proceed along the road until you pass under the railway line. Shortly after the railway bridge is a footpath from the right which leads to the depot, locomotives at the north end and passing traffic on the nearby line can be viewed from here.
3) From the footpath (see above) continue along the road then turn first right into the industrial estate. Continue around to the right then left after the warehouse. The rear of the depot can be viewed from the industrial estate.

Soho Carriage Maintenance Depot

Location: On the south side of the Birmingham to Wolverhampton line in the Birmingham suburb of Soho.

Allocation: N/A

Usual Classes: 08, 323

Vantage Points: The depot can be viewed from passing trains between Birmingham and Wolverhampton.

Visit Permits: Unknown


Springs Branch Component Recovery and Disposal Centre, Wigan

Location: South of Wigan North Western on the east side of the WCML.

Allocation: N/A

Usual Classes: 08, 31, 37, 47, 56

Vantage Points:
1) The depot is partially visible from passing trains on the WCML.
2) On the left of the depot approach road there is an embankment and water tower. The depot can be partially viewed from this area of wasteland. WARNING - This area is officially within the depot boundary and is officially trespassing but at the time of writing enthusiasts viewing the depot from this location were tolerated.

Toton TMD and Yards

Location: The depot and yards are situated on the Erewash Valley lines from Trent Junction to the north.

Allocation: 08, 37, 58, 60, 66

Usual Classes: 08, 31, 37, 47, 56, 58, 60, 66

Vantage Points: The depot and yards can be viewed from "the bank" which is on the east side of the depot and yards. The depot is on the west side of the running lines so binoculars are essential. A regular bus service runs from Nottingham Town centre to Toton Bank Top approximately every 30 minutes, the journey taking about 45 minutes.

Warrington Arpley LIP

Location: The LIP and yards are to the south of Warrington Bank Quay station on the east side of the WCML.

Allocation: N/A

Usual Classes: 08, 31, 37, 56, 60, 66

Vantage Points:
1) The depot and yards can be viewed from passing trains on the WCML and the line to Chester which branches off the WCML to the south of the yards.
2) Turn right outside Warrington Bank Quay station and cross the railway line to Fiddlers Ferry. The footpath runs alongside the station and comes out on the lane to the depot. Locomotives can be viewed from this lane.

Wembley EFOC (European Freight Operating Centre)

Location: South of Wembley Central station on the east side of the WCML.

Allocation: N/A

Usual Classes: 08, 09, 37, 47, 66, 90, 92

Vantage Points: The yard and loco holding sidings can be viewed from trains passing on the WCML.

Visit Permits: N/A


Willesden TMD

Location: To the south of Willesden Junction station on the east side of the WCML out of London Euston.

Allocation: 08, 86, 87, 90

Usual Classes: 08, 86, 87, 90, LHCS

Vantage Points:
1) Turn right out of Willesden Junction Low Level. At the end of the road is the depot access road, observations of the north end of the depot can be made from the depot car park.
2) Observations of both north and south ends of the depot can be made from passing trains on the WCML and on the LUL Bakerloo / Silverlink Suburban line which sandwich the depot.

Wolverhampton Station Sidings

Location: There are various sidings around Wolverhampton station where stock stables awaiting its next turn of duty.
