Shay wheels are fabricated from 8" SCH80 pipe, flat steel spokes and 2 3/16 cold roll hubs.

Using the Bridgeport shaping head to rough out the 1/4" keyways in wheel hubs.

Finishing wheel hub keyway with 1/4" broach.  The nearly finished keyway
can easily be broached just using the drill press.

Shay wheels and axle  note the lower wheel hasn't gotten the flange yet.  The above left wheel
uses a simple 1 piece spoke for the left side while the upper right wheel has a 3/4" wide section
to bolt bevel gear to.  The right wheels still need a 1/4" deep recess turned for drive gear.

Driven bevel gears are made from 1" plate, 1/4" plate and 5" pipe. Top left to right,
1x7.5x8" plate, center and outside cut on rotary table or lathe, finished gear blank welded
and ready to turn gear face and mill teeth.
