Meeting Highlights - A Look Ahead for 2009
WELCOME TO OUR HISTORICAL RAILROAD EXHIBIT The Chapter takes pleasure in welcoming you to its display where we have preserved some outstanding examples of the railroad history of the past. At the front of the exhibit is the Santa Fe Depot from Arcadia, California. The depot was built in 1887 and is a classic example of the architecture of the late 1880's. Also on display you will find various locomotives including a 4-6-4 high speed passenger locomotive (#3450) and a wooden caboose from the Santa Fe; Union Pacific R.R. is represented by the Big Boy 4-8-8-4 (#4014), the largest steam locomotive ever built, the three-cylinder 4-12-2 (#9000), and a Centennial (#6915), the most powerful diesel in existence. The Southern Pacific R.R. is represented by a three-cylinder 4-10-2 (#5021), built in 1926. Some other locomotives in our display consist of the Outer Harbor Terminal Railway 0-6-0 (#2) which was built in 1887, the Fruit Growers Supply Company's Climax type locomotive (#3) which was built in 1909, and the U.S. Potash Company's narrow gauge (#3) was built in 1903. The display also contains a Santa Fe horse express car, a Pullman business class car, an ice refrigerator car, and a track motor car. A chapter brochure describes this equipment in detail and is available in the Station for a donation to the Chapter's equipment restoration fund. The Railway and Locomotive Historical Society is a national organization founded in 1921. The society's work is devoted to the collecting and preservation of all types of railroad memorabilia and the sharing of the members' railroad interests. The Southern California Chapter was chartered in 1953. Our exhibit open houses are held the second weekend of the month at the FAIRPLEX in Pomona with Chapter members and the public encouraged to attend. If you have an interest in our Society, please talk with our members in the Station and pick up a membership application and hear about our exciting plans for the future. Our Chapter is recognized as a non-profit organization and donations are welcomed. THANK YOU Remember that donations to the Chapter and R&LHS are tax deductible so send your checks soon to be in time for credit this year. Membership renewal fees will be due each January. |
