Railfan Pictures of the Week - 3/20/2022

May 2001

Still early days playing with my new digital camera and quickly realizing there is an art to using it correctly. The lag time between pressing the shutter button and actually taking the picture seems to be a fraction of a second, but rather than a small fraction, it is a big one. In order to get moving subjects, a little pan and hope is required. The good thing is that you get an idea about how you are doing right away, so it just comes down to practice.

Decided to try my luck at North Philly Station and seem to be getting the hang of it. Here AEM-7 AMTK 951 is heading west. You can see that the eastbound platform used to extend all the way to Broad Street but has been cut back. The westbound platform stopped just short of Broad.

Next up was a westbound Acela Express led by power car AMTK 2034.
An eastbound Acela Express passes the shorter rebuilt platforms and the painted but shuttered station building. The train is on Track 2 which has since been removed through the station.
Also part of the learning process, finding out the separate viewfinder does not tell you about the glare on the lens. By the time I checked the photo, GP38-2 AMTK 724 was already on the move and the chance at another shot was gone. So too are both the tracks pictured here, removed as part of the station reconfiguration.
