I just have to add a little about the NYC.  My grandfather lived in Mt.
Kisco, and his house was right next to the tracks/station.  We used to
visit him during the 40's and early 50's (I was 5-12 years old during
this time).  The only thing separating the small house from the tracks
was about 15' of yard, and some hedges about 10' high.  You could
really hear and feel those 4-6-4's come barrelling through (if they had them
on freights?), and when the passenger 4-6-4's stopped at the station the
steam sounds were fantastic.  The whole house shook for a few minutes
before, to a few minutes afterwards.  Really an awesome experience.
