The Gamble of Disbelief

.

Have you ever heard of the game called "Russian Roulette?"  If not, don't feel left out... you're better off.  But for the sake of the point of this article, I have to explain the game, so bear with me...

Russian Roulette is literally a game of life or death based solely on the luck of the draw (no pun intended).  A revolver (pistol) is used to play the game with usually no more than one round (bullet) loaded in the cylinder of the revolver.  The way this 'game' is played is to take the revolver in your hand, spin the cylinder with your other hand, point the gun at your head, and pull the trigger.  If you're lucky, the cylinder will have stopped spinning on an empty chamber of the cylinder, not the chamber with the bullet in it.  But... if it just so happens that the cylinder stopped spinning on the loaded chamber... well, I hope you have burial insurance.

The thing about revolvers, however, is that most of them have six chambers in the cylinder.  So if only one round was being used in a revolver during a game, your chances of getting killed are only 1 in 6, or just a little over 16% per turn.

Now, I know what you're thinking... "Who in their right mind would want to play a game like that!?"  Well, your question answers itself... nobody "in their right mind" would want to play this game.  The odds aren't that good, and you are literally risking your life.

     But...

Would it surprise you to know that Russian Roulette is identical to the game that every human being plays every single day of their life?  And would it also surprise you to know that the odds of losing in this game are much greater than in Russian Roulette?  "What game is this" you're wondering?  Though this game doesn't actually have a name, for the sake of this article I'm going to dub it the "God Gamble."

The "God Gamble" is a game that people play by living their lives believing either that there is a God or that their isn't a God.  And since "is" and "isn't" are the only two possibly options in this game, this splits the odds right down the middle to 50/50, meaning that you have a 50% chance that there is a God, and you have a 50% chance that there is not a God.  Quite frankly, with odds like that you'd be safer playing Russian Roulette because you have at least 5 possible safe answers in that game, giving you you a little better than a 83% chance of winning.  Russian Roulette is also safer because you have the option to choose whether or not you want to play.  But in the "God Gamble," everyone plays it whether we like it or not.  Even when you think you're not playing... you ARE playing.

So to those of you who are not Christians who say that you would never play such a game as Russian Roulette, do you see now that by simply being alive, you are inadvertently involved in a game with much greater stakes?  Even if you choose not to believe, there is still that 50% chance that you could be wrong.  So ask yourself this... are the possible consequences worth it?  Do you value your life enough that you wouldn't risk it in a game like Russian Roulette?  If so, then why are you risking your eternal life in a game like the "God Gamble?"  We are all going to die eventually... that is a undenyable fact of life.  Why not plan for the trip by preparing yourself to meet God if He does infact exist so that you won't be counted among the 50% who lost the game?  Is it not better to be safe than sorry?

.

There is a bumper sticker that states basically this same point by saying "If you are living like there is no God... you'd better be right!"  The point that this bumper sticker is trying to make is simply this... if you choose to spend your life gambling that there is no God to whom you will answer when you die, you'd better hope you're right, because if it turns out that there is a God, you're gonna have hell to pay.  And you'll pay it by spending an eternity burning in hell... eternally separated from the God who gave you no less than 100% of His time calling to you to come spend eternity with Him.
