A 'COUPLE' of points about

S Scale Sergent Engineering Couplers

Sergent Engineering once offered an S scale version of their scale-sized, scale-operating couplers.  This original S coupler was identical to the original HO coupler.  Photos of the original S and HO couplers are shown below :

After improving the design of their coupler, Sergent Engineering cancelled production of both the S and HO original couplers.  They focused on refining and producing their HO coupler due to its larger market, and put the S coupler aside as a Legacy item.  The Legacy S coupler was shown on the Sergent Engineering site for a while (presumably until their stock ran out), but was later removed due to their indecision about whether or not to ever issue a new and improved version.  The page showing the Legacy S coupler is still on their site, there is just no link to it on their menu.  Click HERE to view the Legacy S coupler's page.  All of their old stock is sold out, so although there is a BUY NOW option shown on the Legacy page, none are available for purchase.

Now, a few years after production of the original S coupler ceased, and after many requests from S scale enthusiasts, Sergent Engineering has finally decided to offer a new and improved S coupler.  I, along with another S scaler, have received a few samples of the PRE-production New Sergent S coupler to review.  Photos of this Pilot model are shown below :

The photos above show ONLY a PRE-PRODUCTION TEST SAMPLE of the new Sergent S scale coupler, NOT the refined, finished product that will be marketed.  There is still some work to be done to perfect the new coupler.  When completed, the new S coupler almost exactly resemble the new Sergent HO coupler seen HERE.  This pilot model is merely a test piece that was made to ensure the manufacturing process.  It successfully passed this process, so it is now only a matter of time before S scalers have a new-and-improved prototypical looking and prototypically operating coupler!
