More GRS Searchlight Signal Details

Above.  Sighting device for mast mounted signals.  Looking through the pinhole on the rear standard, the signal can be aligned with the cross painted on the glass held by the front standard.

Above.  Commanding view of three GRS SA
searchlight signals.

Above and to the left.  Views of elegant GRS side of mast mounting bracket.  These often break when old signals are taken down (i.e crash to the ground), which makes them somewhat difficult to obtain.  To mount the signal on the smaller four inch diameter pipe, I installed a galvanized pipe fitting in front of each nut as a spacer.

Above.  On GRS searchlight signals, the lens visor is attached to the lens retaining ring with several nuts and bolts.  Once attached, the lens retaining ring and visor can be attached to the front of the housing as a unit to secure the outer lens.  Because the lens retaining ring is relatively thin cast iron, it is subject to cracking like the one shown above, especially when stress is applied to the visor.  On the US&S searchlight signals, the visor is bolted around the flange on the front of the housing which holds the outer doublet.  The US&S steel lens retaining ring then fits under the visor to secure the outer doublet.
