Southern California Traction Club

First "Loop" Run at Palos Verdes, April 2000

The Southern California Traction Club realized one of its major goals on April 15, 2000 when it ran a complete rectangular layout at the South Coast Botanic Garden NMRA Train Show. Using 20 modules for the first time, the display was 19 by 22 feet and employed a two-track mainline throughout all the modules. Four separate Innovator 3500 controllers power the main lines of the display, each controlling one side of the rectangle. Just a little over three years ago, the club displayed at this show for the first time with five modules, all of which were part of this display.

This is almost the entire display at the show along with the club President at that time, George Huckaby, facing the camera, and the club treasurer at that time, Bill Kift, facing away from the camera.

The four-track main begins here. Member George Jones of Culver City, CA owns these modules.

Indiana Railroad 377, owned by member George Huckaby, was the first car to completely run around the rectangle. It is running on a four-track module owned by Byron Brainard of Laguna, CA.

The loop around the baseball diamond is on the club's first module developed in 1995 for the club and it is owned by Bill Kift of Long Beach, CA. The two track curve beyond the loop is on the most recent corner module made operational. This corner and all corner modules presently belong to the club. This corner module will be part of a three-module downtown city area and was developed by Charles Hepperle of Claremont, CA. Car 377 is in the background making its historic initial run at 8:56 A.M. Saturday morning on April 15th.

The first portion of what will be a two-table car display and storage module is under construction. These two modules will feature eleven storage tracks, a loop at the rear, and the three-track shop. George Huckaby worked on this module throughout the two-day show. Although these two modules are contained within the rectangle, they are very visible to show attendees. On the module is a portion of George's extensive PCC car collection, most of which feature the new 1999 Bowser drive. Visible in the photo are San Francisco Muni #1060 (Newark), Muni #1061 (Pacific Electric), Muni #1063 (Baltimore), and Muni #1058 (Chicago). In the next row are Muni #1056 (Kansas City), Muni #1057 (Cincinnati), Muni #1059 (Boston) and Boston Elevated Railway Type 4 #5211. Behind those cars are San Diego Electric Railway #503, Muni #1051 (San Francisco), Lehigh Valley Transit Jewett #803, Brooklyn & Queens Transit #1000 and Kansas City Public Service #729.
