CPR PASSENGER TRAINS ALONG THE GALT SUB - 1895 TO 1971
Following "Named Trains" and "train numbers only" are trains first using same right-of-way before the CPR GO Trains (1981- to current) began operating. The last CPR passenger RDC Dayliner ended 30 October 1971 and for almost exactly ten years NO passenger trains operated along the CPR Galt Sub until 25 Oct 1981 with the CPR-GO Ceremonial Train, and regular CPR-GO timetable operations 26 Oct 1981.

I am listing ONLY timetabled passenger trains Toronto Union to Guelph Jct/London/Windsor/Detroit where GO currently operates and the stations which the current GO trains now use [Kipling/Dixie/Cooksville/Erindale/Streetsville/Meadowvale/Lisgar/Milton] and are passing where once the CPR had same/simliar station locations (see below).

The Branch to Orangeville-Owen Sound, Teeswater, others towards London/Windsor are listed so one can see where the CPR trains originated and terminated.

Because of their rarity and uniqueness, I have included optimized scans of the first 1953 CPR RDC Dayliner PTTs.

At the bottom are NON-COMPREHENSIVE NOTES on locomotives used (steam, diesel, RDCs), timetable notes, and incidents/accidents on the Galt.

    NON-COMPREHENSIVE INCIDENT/ACCIDENT NOTES:
  • 14 Oct 1908 - Islington - head-on collison (some date 15th)
  • 28 Oct 1912 Streestville - CP Eng 687 head-on collison with CP Eng 1024 on #633 (1024 later renumbered that year to 2224) - a troop train (48th Highlanders) returning from manouvers at Milton, collided with fast Detroit passenger train - 2 killed - Wesley Hart freight eng killed on the 687 - one report reads "He fooled away his air resulting in this tragedy..." and also went passed a red board and the slated passing track switch while 1024 held the main - engineer Hart on CP 1024 killed.
  • 17 Feb 1917 Guelph Jct - Eng #871 on train #902 ran out of coal around Puslinch - situation reported to the dispatcher who told the crew to cut off the train at Guelph Jct for coal - a number of trains already at the Jct holding so 871 had to do a lot of switching to get to the coal dock then the coal dock foreman refused to fill his tender claiming the 871's sides were too high for the tender to fill - apparently the engineer and fireman walked away from their engine - later they saw the engine spotted at the coal shute so they went and hand bombed the tender - steam was being raised with the blower and a good level of water but then and without explanation the engineer heard a noise and found himself on the ground when the boiler exploded - the left seam of the crown sheet and side sheet meet ripped open full length along the boiler - it has been suggested that the boiler tubes had been leaking even after its major overhaul three months earlier - lucky as many don't survive a boiler explosion
  • 2329 on #19 'The Canadian' collides with eng 951 on freight #910 27 Nov 1927 - engineer William Burnet (relation) and five passengers killed / fireman R Post seriously injured
  • 25 Nov 1931 Hamilton freight #83 struck CP frieght Milton Diamond - considerable damage - no injuries / the CNR Auxillary train sent to clear the wreck derailed into a ditch at Terra Cotta injuring the crane operator - Auxillaries then were sent from CN Hamilton and CN Stratford to clear the CP Milton wreck

  • 2856 18 June 1946 fails so 2205 replaces
  • 9050/9051 RDC on #630 14 Mar 1954 hit cement truck at Dixie and derail - steam 2235 double heading #905 freight on south track side swiped 9050 - one car on freight carrying dynamite but no explosion - 1 passenger killed, several injured / 9052 replaces until 9050 repaired
  • 09 Dec 1954 George Paquette was operating the RDC at abt 80mph when the RDC struck a car at the Hornby crossing - man aged 82 in car from Milton killed
  • 9052 RDC #630 16 Aug 1955 wreck at Guelph Jct causes #630 to use Hamilton Sub, Cowpath and CN Lakeshore to Union
  • 17 May 1955 Dayliner (one RDC) - no number given - hit truck at North Queen known as Alderwood crossing then - Dayliner doing 70-75 mph at time and took engineer George Paquette more than a mile to get RDC stopped - lead wheel had derailed and ran just inside the rail on the ties (damage to RDC abt $10,000 1955 Cdn dollars) - 1 passenger on train killed
  • 2205/5420 02 May 1956 out of Lambton Yd crash off Water Street Bridge (Galt) onto road - engineer Willian Palmer, Fireman Harry Blocka, Brakeman Thomas Watson killed - engs later scrapped (2205 was assigned as assist power Lambton Yard at the time and assisting 5420 )
  • 10 Nov 1979 Mississauga Train derailment (no need to add more!)
  • 02 Jan 1990 Streetsville CP #515 derails 23 cars near Streetsville GO station - broken wheel on freight cause, no hazardous leaks - GO uses buses for two days
  • 28 Aug 2008 man hit by CP freight mile 32 - in critical condition
  • (Because too current I won't list GO 'incidents' but assume typical minor derailments, trespasser deaths, crossing incidents/accidents, mechanical delays, freight train delays to GO)
