D. Kerr

I have created this guide to Tomix freight cars because the product line easily becomes confusing. Tomix modified its freight wagon product numbering method over the years, including reusing product numbers for very different types. Many numbers were assigned to two different cars, and some to more. Conversely, many similar-looking (or perhaps identical) cars appear under multiple product numbers. There appear to have been two numbering series.
In the first numbering series, the cars from 2701 through 2722 closely match the early Tomy-branded cars (see separate list on this website), with a few replacements. They were mostly withdrawn after 1987, which is also the year when Japanese National Railway (J.N.R.) transitioned to Japan Rail (J.R.) to become privatized. Additional cars were added with higher product numbers, and some of the low-numbered cars were reincarnated as similar "Made in Japan" cars in the 2750 series. These too were mostly withdrawn starting sometime after 1992, with one or two lingering until 1996-1997.

By 1996, Tomix was using a second, revamped numbering system, still in the 2700-series. It assigned cars to previously-used product numbers in a wholly different fashion. Two-axle cars were assigned from 2701 upward, while double-truck "bogie" cars were assigned from 2760 upward. Starting in 2006, double-truck cars were added working downward from 2759.

This list is based on catalogs and other sources. The names in English come from both the catalogs (typically "wagon") and the product boxes (typically "car"). Dates are provided to the best of my abilities given the resources available. I have also shown the country of manufacture, where known. The list may not be free of errors or omissions, particularly cars or sets that were "special issues."

For a good introduction in English to Japanese freight wagon class categories, see the "Sumida Crossing" website: www.sumidacrossing.org/SumidaCrossing/JapanFreightCars.html.
