Trainstop and Stopping Mark at Moorgate
A photo of the bay road tracks at Moorgate
(Metropolitan) showing current rail gaps cut to accommodate trainstops. The
trainstops are provided with wooden ramps to protect them from damage by loose collector
shoes.
Both the trainstops are shown in the raised
position. In this location they are provided to enforce the 10 mi/h speed limit
imposed for all trains entering terminal roads. The trainstop will only lower if the
train speed is detected at less than 10 mi/h.
This photo also shows an example of the bullhead
track still common on London Underground. The rails are mounted in cast iron chairs
and secured by keys knocked in with a hammer. The keys are clearly visible securing
the rail nearest the camera.
Note also, fixed to the sleepers, the stopping
marks for 6-car trains.
