The Mission of the Museum

Without a museum, the Unadilla Valley's railroad heritage may not be preserved, or at best, will be lost to other museums outside the local area. Most of our railroads' rolling stock and other artifacts are now far away. The Unadilla Valley Railway Museum will preserve both the images and artifacts of this area's proud and irreplaceable railroad heritage by acquiring photographs, archives, documents, and structures, and restoring and operating historic locomotives and railcars.

The Unadilla Valley Railway Museum will display the technology and illustrate the traditions of the area's railroad history and also interpret the economic, technological, and sociel impacts that railroads had upon the growth and evolution of the area in agriculture, industry, and commerce.

Museum exhibits will provide visitors with a visual record of the evolution of railroad technology and highlight unique and distinctive features of our area's railroad history. The museum will also promote research into the history of railroading and will preserve the archival records of our area's railroad history.

Your Contribution

The Unadilla Valley Railway Society has a vital role to play in this preservation effort. The interests of the society include all aspects of the railroads that affected our area's growth and development.

We envison a broad and important role for volunteers in preserving, restoring, and interpreting the collection for visitors. The contributions of the society can begin with the design of the museum and continue with the restoration, operation, and maintenance of the museum's historic equipment. Volunteers will also be needed for fund-raising and historic research, writing, and interpretation. Whatever your individual talent or expertise, we need you to contribute to this great effort.

The success of the Unadilla Valley Railway Museum will require the enthusiasm, commitment, and support of many members. Whether you are a railroad historian or employee, or just interested in the romance of our area's railroad history, the Unadilla Valley Railway Society encourages your participation.
