Monday, June 5, 2000 - Reviving the C&CV Railroad
NEW BERLIN--The revival of the Cooperstown & Charlotte Valley Railroad
will
be the main topic of the Monday, June 5 meeting of the Unadilla Valley
Railway Society. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in the lower level
of the
New Berlin Village Library. Admission is free and everyone is welcome
to
attend.
Aric Peery will give a slide presentation about the C&CV's 1999
season,
when the railroad's present owner, the Leatherstocking Railway Historical
Society, began running excursion trains between Milford and Cooperstown.
Excursion operations began with a late start after Memorial Day and
continued until the successful Halloween and Santa trains at the end
of the
year.
Peery's presentation will also highlight the events leading up to the
reopening of the railroad. The line had not been used regularly in
at least
15 years, so much track and roadbed rehabilitation had to take place.
Ballast was brought in on a 31-car train with a leased Green Mountain
locomotive.
Peery is employed by the Leatherstocking Railway Historical Society
as an
administrative assistant. He has been a member of the society since
1989,
and he presently holds the appointed office of archivist/curator.
