Rail News from Central Virginia
Week of March 4, 1996
By Vic Stone
Mid-week report for the Piedmont area for 1st week of March,
1996
NS: Traffic is still heavy with many second sections including
M55's, W41's, etc. 460 has been running earlier, arriving in
Waynesboro about 5 PM for the past week (perhaps a change in
schedule?). Widecabs have appeared on virtually every train.
Several Z96's have run in the past week (second section to coal
train 696).
CSX: Empties continue to run over the Mountain/Piedmont. On
Monday, there were 3 trains in the afternoon, all of which had
solid leased power (one set had a EMD leasor, HATX unit; one
had pure GE Leasing, and the last was two HATX's). Amtrak 51
was delayed for about an hour and a half because of a stuck
truck on a crossing just east of C'ville. Adding to the delay
caused by the holding for connections of #79 at Washington, the
train became about 3 hours late leaving C'ville. A set of
empties that #51 was supposed to overtake at Brand (again) made
it all the way to Craigsville before meeting #50, and arrived
ahead of #51 at Clifton Forge.
