Santa Fe Photos - Tim Vermande

The Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe has long been one of the premier roads of American memory and imagination. No doubt much of that memory is from Lionel's famous replica of the red and silver "warbonnet" color scheme, and the imagination from an unprecedented advertising campaign depicting the untamed West.

Beyond that, AT&SF played a crucial role in western development. It received Federal support, but didn't attract the attention of the "transcontinental" Union Pacific. Unlike many roads with more grandiose names, it eventually reached far beyond its name cities with a main line from Chicago to Kansas City and then Los Angeles and San Francisco. Other major lines went to Denver and Houston. In 1986, a proposed merger with Southern Pacific was denied. Some equipment had already received a new paint scheme in anticipation of this merger, leading to comments that "SPSF" stood for "Shouldn't Paint So Fast." The scheme was sometimes called "Kodachrome" because of a resemblance to the box of Kodak's slide film. In 1995 it merged with Burlington Northern, to form Burlington Northern Santa Fe, now BNSF Railway.
