BN was the result of a merger of Chicago Burlington & Quincy, Great Northern, Northern Pacific, and Spokane, Portland & Seattle in 1970. At the time, it was the largest railroad on the continent. In 1995, it merged with Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe to form Burlington Northern Santa Fe.
