Chicago & North Western Photos - Tim Vermande
The "Northwestern" was one of the few roads that went exactly where its name said: north and west from Chicago. It never went far enough to get a long haul, however. The west line survived on traffic as a Chicago connection for Union Pacific, the north on lumber and grain. CNW also hauled iron ore from Marquette MI to a dock in Escanaba and commuters in the Chicago area. The road went through an employee purchase as one attempt to reverse a long decline. The line's salvation was incorporation into Union Pacific in 1995.
