The "L"
As was typical, Chicago's transit system began with a number of small, privately owned companies. Unified operation began in 1947 when the newly-formed authority purchased Chicago Surface Lines and the Chicago Rapid Transit Company; in 1952 it purchased the Chicago Motor Coach Company.
Often referred to as the "L" for its elevated trackage, the system also has street-level operation and subways.
