Chessie System Photos - Tim Vermande
Chesapeake & Ohio Railway had controlled the Baltimore & Ohio (and through it, Western Maryland, Reading, and Jersey Central) since 1963. A common color scheme (dark blue with yellow trim) and numbering pattern were instituted. In 1972, a bright Chessie System color scheme was introduced, featuring C&O's mascot cat. In 1980, Chessie and Family Lines formed CSX, and in 1983 the new corporation adopted a common paint scheme. By 1986 the separate companies had been merged.
