Conrail Photos - Tim Vermande

The Consoliated Rail Corporation, better known as Conrail, was formed on April 1, 1976 from several bankrupt eastern railroads. With $2.1 billion in Federal funds, it began a rehabilitation program and abandoned or sold much track (including the Northeast Corridor to Amtrak). In 1999 it was bought by CSX and Norfolk Southern, who divided its routes.
