The South Shore traces its origins to 1901. It became part of Samuel Insull, Jr's empire in 1925. As part of a massive rehabilitation, it received new cars from Pullman in 1926 and 1927, and another order for identical cars from Standard Steel Car Co. in 1929. Most of these cars were rebuilt after 1942: they were lengthened to 77 or 78 feet and given new interiors. After 1946, the rebuilding included larger windows and air conditioning. In 1982, the road began to receive new cars from Sumitomo (Nippon Sharyo), purchased by the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District and Chicago's Metra. In 1990, NICTD bought the line, and leases freight operation rights.
