The original D&M ran from Bay City to Cheboygan, falling short of the cities in its name. It is now the Lake States Railway. #974 at Bay City, August 1978
D&M numbered its locomotives for the date of acquisition or rebuilding. #974 switching at Bay City, August 1978.
At the Conrail start-up, D&M finally reached Mackinac by purchasing some Penn Central lines, and received the carferry Chief Wawatam as part of the bargain. #975 switches the ferry in July 1979.
