RETIRED LIRR LOCOMOTIVES AND EQUIPMENT:
The LIRR removed five more cab units from
their roster on Oct. 2, 1999. The retired units included ALCO FA-1M #616, enroute
to a tourist line in Canada, EMD F-7Ms 620, 621 and #622. Also retired was an
F-9M #619. These units were sold to the Semiole Gulf RR in Florida and to Hydro
Power in NJ.
In March of 2000, the LIRR removed the remaining ALCO FA cab units: 607, 614,
and 615 from their roster andmoved them to NY&A's Fresh Pond yard as seen above.
These Alcos were shipped out on 3/13/00 via CSX. These three were the last of
the cab units from the LIRR (FA's or EMD F units).
These engines were replaced by the new DE-30's and DM-30's currently in operation.
Watching these engines pull a long double-decker train at night is quite an
impressive sight especially at one of the many grade crossings on the Island.

Once each week in the warmer months, usually on Thursday after 11 p.m., the
Providence & Worcester R.R. brings a unit train of specially designed beige-colored
hoppers to Fresh Pond directly from Connecticut. On Sunday evenings, these stone-filled
hoppers are hauled out to Medford, LI, to Prima Asphalt. Usually attached to
the consist from P&W is a unit train of LIRR hoppers loaded with ballast destined
for LIRR M.O.W. Both of these loads originate from the Tilcon quarries up in
Connecticut. The P&W has haulage rights on MNCRR and on CSX trackage over the
Hell Gate Bridge. Once the motive power uncouples (typically 4 or 5 engines),
they and the crew lay over until Friday morning and then make the return trip
following rush hour (on Metro-North). The engines return to Fresh Pond late
Sunday evening to pick up the empties-they head back to New England on Monday
morning. This movement is suspended in the winter months because of the frozen
ground. Service resumes again each April.

NH in Connecticut;
2013 will be dislayed at the Danbury Rail Museum.
