June 2003 Update

Work is progressing rather quickly this month. As of 6/14, all of the side panels on the right side are back up, and the new glass for the port-holes is in. Rust damage was removed from the nose and soon new sheet metal will be welded in (after the rust damage is addressed first).

On 7/7, 918 was taken out for a test run on the OTR tracks that parallel the Bay Bridge approach. Check the video page for a clip of that.

SIDE PANEL WORK
The following photos were taken on May 31st and June 5th:

Al Fowler peeks out of one of the port holes as it is set in place.
Don McPherson welds in more channel iron to support the side panels.

All the panels are up. Some finish work will follow.

NOSE REPAIR WORK
The following photos were taken on June 14th.

Don looks over the rust damage after the sheet metal was removed.

Jon Vlasak grinds the paint off to prepare the surface for cutting.
Don chisels away at the rusted sheetmetal with the air hammer.
Jon, Don and Al use a piece of bar as a straight edge for making the next cut.
Don cuts another large portion of the rusted sheetmetal from the nose.
Break time for Jon...
Al uses whatever it takes to pry off a stubborn section of sheetmetal.
