May, 2004 Update

There are several simultaneous projects going on right now, so this page will be organized by project...

Right side reassembly

During the beginning of the month we re-hung the lower side panels. These are the second set to go up on this side. The first set was found to be defective in that the metal was separating from the plywood. We learned a few lessons in that attempt and created a new procedure for putting these together (see bottom of page). With the new panels made we were ready to button up the right side. First, cork gasket material was placed on the beams where the panels would be touching. Then, Don, Jon, Guy, Mhat, and myself (Dan) hung the panels. Batons went up next and bolts were set in place. The next thing to happen is the batons will be loosened up to allow for caulking. Then the rest of the bolts will be installed. Any finishing bondo work will then be performed. They will then be primed with self etching primer.

Left side disassembly

During the middle of May the left side panels were removed from the engine. The lower panels were beyond hope. They will be replaced with new "plymetal" panels that are being prepared. The middle panels that contain the louvers and portholes will be repaired, stripped and primed. The upper panels that contain the shutters were removed some time ago.

Pilot

Metal work on the pilot was finished during the last week of May by Don. Guy and Luke cleaned up the inside to get it ready for black paint. Dan has been taking care of the finishing work with body filler and primer. Don also made the cover plate for the access hole that was once used to access the steam line on the bottom of the pilot (see last photo). The pilot was reinstalled on May 29th.

"Plymetal" panel building

Don demonstrates how he makes the "plymetal" side panels that are going up on the sides of 918.
1. Spreading the glue on the treated plywood.
2. Lays out the sheetmetal over the plywood.
3. Uses a roller to flatten out the metal and push out any air pockets.
4. Sets sections of rail on the panel to weigh down the sheetmetal as the adhesive hardens.
Later the edges will be soldered together to seal them from moisture.
