GENERAL: Amtrak purchased 20 of these units from GE Transportation Systems in 1991. They are basically pattered after a freight unit but are equipped with HEP capacity. They were purchased as a "hold-over" before the Genesis (P40DC's) were built. |
SPECS: These units are 3200 horsepower with HEP capacity. |
TERRITORY: Primarally operating on the West Coast as well as Midwestern trains operating out of Chicago. These units can be found as substitute power on the Coast Starlight, also as switcher units in the yards. They also work out of Chicago as switchers and backup power for some trains originating out of Chicago. |
NOTES: When these units were originally delivered, they had a special Phase III paint scheme that caused these units to be known as "Pepsi Cans". Today, that paint scheme no longer exists as some units are now in Phase V paint with several in Phase IV paint. A couple of these units are now owned by Amtrak California and have been repainted/renumbered. |
