Builders identical twin to #13 and US Navy Fleet Supply Base - South Brooklyn Section
# 1 (c/n 6366) & #2 (c/n 6367) (all have consecutive SN's)

BEDT documents dated June 24, 1963 state #12 was already sold for undisclosed
amount in June of 1963.

Non-BEDT documents show R. Ziel purchased #12, (confirmed) for the anticipated
"Sag Harbor and Scuttle Hole Rail Road" (which never coalesced).

Ron Ziel confirms he purchased #12 in June 1963 for the sum of $900.

Popularly (but erroneously) believed to have been a Brooklyn Navy Yard locomotive.
It did operate in Brooklyn, NY; but at the Fleet Supply Base, not the Navy Yard.

This 35mm negative was acquired off eBay in 2011, but take note of the D&RGW box car number -
it is the same as the preceding images (which have been on this website since 2009 and are from Dave Keller).
Therefore I came to a conclusion that Steve Meyers and Bradford Stiles were at this location at the same time taking photos.
I contacted Dave who was in contact with Steve Meyers to see if my hypothesis was correct. Here is the reply from Steve via Dave:

"Gosh, I haven't heard Brad's name since the first time I left New York in mid-1957. Brad and I were two thirds of a close trio of railfans who spent many years either singly, or as a duo or as a full group wandering around the metropolitan area taking (mostly) electric railway pix. Once we heard that the BEDT was considering diesels, we spent many Saturdays around Kent Avenue before the steam operation ended.."

Ron Ziel contacted me to fill in the gaps and respond to my inquiries regarding this photo.
When he purchased #12 from BEDT, they requested it be moved off property,
but would transport it free of charge to any terminal of his choice.
Mr. Ziel arranged to lease 100' of track from Pennsylvania RR in the Meadows Yard, NJ for $100 per year.
Subsequently, #12 was carfloated and relocated to Meadows Yard.

Mr. Ziel also was able to answer the question of why #15 is in the same location in another photo.
As Ed Bernard, who purchased #15 from BEDT, also had to remove #15 from BEDT property,
Mr. Bernard approached Mr. Ziel to use some of the storage track, which was agreed upon.

Many thanks to Mr. Ziel for taking the time to answer these questions!

Mr. Ziel also was able to answer why the locomotive is marked Manorville & Eastport.

This was the original shortline that Mr. Ziel and George Foster
intended to operate #12 and #16 on an unused branchline in Long Island.
When that venture did not come to fruition, the new location was named
Sag Harbor & Scuttle Hole. Unfortunately, this did not come to realization either.

Many thanks to Mr. Ziel for taking the time to fiorward this information!

It is with great pleasure that I post the following! As of May 20, 2010; BEDT #12 located at the Railroad Museum of Florida (Parrish, FL)
is now proudly wearing BEDT livery again!

Pat Masterson, furnished the image and the following information:

"Phil, we just finished some cosmetic work on #12. the black paint was applied by some girls from the Manatee School for the Arts. In Florida, all high schools students are required to do volunteer work in order to graduate. (what an excellant pre requisite! auth.)

Our Railroad Museum is a non-profit, so the young folks can do volunteer work for us. The Museum supplied paint, brushes, and gear, and the girls supplied the labor. Unfortunately, they weren't permitted to climb on top and do the roof. Guess that will be my job one of these days."

The lettering was done by our member Justin King. He used the 2 GIFs that you sent me, as patterns. You had given me the real dimensions of the lettering, and he followed those directions. I think the results are pretty good, under the circumstances.

Hats off, two thumbs up and a hip hip hurray to all the folks who under took this project! The old gal looks good!
