UP 4017 on display at National Railroad Museum at
Green Bay, WI, 9/17/02.
25 of these magnificent "Big Boy" locomotives were built between 1941
and 1944 for heavy freight service between Salt Lake City, UT,
and Cheyenne, WY. They were in service until 1959. Eight Big Boys
are preserved today. Although Big Boys are often
credited with being the largest and most powerful locomotive built; in
fact there are other loco's with superior numbers in any of
several "size metrics".
