Canadian Pacific Special
In the San Francisco Bay Area

If there is one thing I like better than wigwag signals...it's F-units.

On November 6th, 2000, a Canadian Pacific special featuring 2 F-9's, a GP-38-2 and some awesomely restored vintage passenger cars arrived in San Francisco. The purpose of the trip was to promote Fairmont Hotels, a company owned by Canadian Pacific. The passengers on the train consisted mostly of travel agents. For those of us railfans, this was an opportunity not to be missed.

Here is a small gallery of photos by various railfans of the trip...

Later that evening, the special heads north to San Francisco. CP 1400 splits the target signals at Brisbane with barely enough light to make this photo. The train was minutes behind Caltrain #77.

A couple seconds later it crosses the old bridge. Built in 1907, it is one of the few bridges that still retains the Southern Pacific label.

Jim Acker caught the special as it sat on one leg of the Milpitas wye in San Jose. The train was delayed for a couple hours as the Caterpillar generator got some last minute maintenance. This is what supplies power to the cars.

Jim had the opportunity to peek inside the cab of 1400 while it was sitting in San Jose. Quite immaculate to say the least. Looks like it received a new control stand at some point.
