SALIDA, COLORADO
Headquarters for the D&RGW Second and Third Divisions, Salida, which means 'exit' in Spanish, was a major Division point
and the central terminus of the narrow gauge to the D&RGW standard gauge mainline. Still prior to the opening of Moffat
Tunnel, Salida was on the D&RGW's transcontinental route and served heavy passenger traffic prior to the Depression.
In the late nineteen twenties, regular narrow gauge passenger trains also served from Salida to Alamosa and over Marshall
Pass.
Salida is modeled with several modifications for the layout:
- The original Depot is modeled without the extensions that were in place by 1926
- The narrow gauge and standard gauge turntables were placed much closer together (eliminating the standard gauge car
maintenance facility, which still stands today) and the long ash pit
- The standard gauge turntable is flipped 180 degrees due to space limitations
- Dual, standard, and narrow gauge tracks were matched to prototype as much as possible, but several tracks had to be omitted.
