Historic McCloud Equipment: Sand Car #503

Shortly after the McCloud River Railroad dieselized the company built a new sanding tower adjacent to the new shop building. The railroad built a hopper on one side of the tower to supply sand and then retroffited an old tank car to transport sand to the tower. The sand car, MR #503, served in this capacity until around 1972, when the shops removed the tank car body off of the old tank car frame and mounted it on flatcar #821 to create the new sand car. Follow the link to the page for Flat #821 for more photos and information.
