A basic module is a 2-foot deep by four-, six- or eight-foot long section of a model railroad. Other dimensions are possible, but this is the most common.

There are many special features that can be added to a basic module to improve its operation and appearance, and enhance the railroading experience presented by the Club. This section defines these special features and their symbols. |
The NTRAK specifications permit an optional placement of the Blue track (referred to as "Alternate Blue"). NRMRC has many modules which feature this line. |
Some modules are corner modules. These can be 3' or 4', inside or outside, etc. |
Some modules have independent loops of track for additional trains. These loops may be completely separate, or may connect to the branch Line (Blue) or one of the main lines (Red or Yellow). |
Some members have constructed modules featuring industries and associated trackwork. These are designated as "Industrial District" modules. They provide locations for trains to drop off and/or pick up cars. |
This is a special-purpose module which permits the joining of multiple module loops together along a "backbone" to create a larger layout. |
Some modules include things of a military nature. |
The NTRAK specifications permit an optional "Mountain Subdivision" track (referred to as the "Green Line"). All NRMRC modules have the Mountain track. |
Some modules feature a passing siding(s) connected to one of the main tracks. |
Some modules are just plain strange... |
In order to provide a facility for deploying and recovering trains, several members have constructed modules featuring yards. These tend to be busy places for keeping trains running during a show. |
