Introduction

The module is the basic component of an NTRAK layout. Details of the modules that will be part of a layout, whether at a local clubhouse or at a train show, are vital to the successful design of the layout, in which various modules are interconnected.

What is a NTRAK Module

A basic module is a 2-foot deep by four-, six- or eight-foot long section of a model railroad. Other dimensions are possible, but this is the most common.

There are normally three standard tracks on an NTRAK module — the two main lines and a branch line. The main lines are designated (from the front of the module) Red and Yellow. The branch line is designated Blue. Some modules have the branch (Blue) line in an alternate position (Alt Blue) and some modules have a mountain line (Green) at the rear of the module and elevated above the other tracks. All NRMRC modules have the Mountain track.

By connecting modules together, several people can build a layout limited only by the number of available modules and the square feet of available space. The smallest layout would be four corner modules. One of the largest layouts constructed used over 700 modules.

The basic reference for NTRAK modules is NRAIL's NTRAK "How To" Manual, available at NRAIL, or from your local NTRAK club.

Special Feature Modules

There are many special features that can be added to a basic module to improve its operation and appearance, and enhance the railroading experience presented by the Club. This section defines these special features and their symbols.

Alternate Branch Icon Alternate Blue Track

The NTRAK specifications permit an optional placement of the Blue track (referred to as "Alternate Blue"). NRMRC has many modules which feature this line.

Corner Module Icon Corner Module

Some modules are corner modules. These can be 3' or 4', inside or outside, etc.

Loop IconIndependent Loop

Some modules have independent loops of track for additional trains. These loops may be completely separate, or may connect to the branch Line (Blue) or one of the main lines (Red or Yellow).

Industry Icon Industrial District

Some members have constructed modules featuring industries and associated trackwork. These are designated as "Industrial District" modules. They provide locations for trains to drop off and/or pick up cars.

Junction Module Icon Junction Module

This is a special-purpose module which permits the joining of multiple module loops together along a "backbone" to create a larger layout.

Military Icon Military

Some modules include things of a military nature.

Mountain Division Icon Mountain Subdivision

The NTRAK specifications permit an optional "Mountain Subdivision" track (referred to as the "Green Line"). All NRMRC modules have the Mountain track.

Siding Icon Siding

Some modules feature a passing siding(s) connected to one of the main tracks.

Saucer Icon Weird

Some modules are just plain strange...

Yard Icon Yard Facility

In order to provide a facility for deploying and recovering trains, several members have constructed modules featuring yards. These tend to be busy places for keeping trains running during a show.
