Les Re 4/4" 11371 - 11397 ont été adaptées pour pouvoir circuler sur le réseau des chemins de fer allemands DBAG et réimmatriculées dans la série Re 421. Les modifications effectuées comportent : Remplacement du pantographe 2 par un pantographe type Schunck à palette de 1950mm de large, utilisable jusqu’à une vitesse de 120 km/h. Le pantographe 1 reste au type standard (Pantographe BBC, palette de 1450mm, utilisable jusqu’à 140 km/h Adaptation au gabarit DBAG (plus étroit que le gabarit CFF): démontage des rambardes en coin de caisse, remplacement des mains montoires des cabines de conduite à profil rond par un profil plat, modification des chasses-pierres. Installation des systèmes d’arrêt automatique des trains aux normes DBAG, types PZB (Indusi) et LZB Installation de la radio sol-train DBAG (Appareil AEG ZFM 21) Modifications correspondantes des postes de conduite. Contrairement aux autres locomotives des séries Re 420 / 430, les Re 421 ne sont pas équipées de la climatisation des cabines de conduites (car cela aurait nécéssité une homologation spéciale pour pouvoir circuler en Allemagne)
Certaines Re 421 n’ont pas reçu immédiatement le pantographe au gabarit DBAG, et n’étaient donc initialement pas habilitées à circuler en Allemagne (Voir la remarque dans la liste), exemple : Re 421.374-0 / Hinwil 18.6.2003 (avec 2 pantographes BBC standard)
Utilisation actuelle : Mêmes roulements que les Re 4/4" / Re 420 / Re 482 de la division Cargo Trafic marchandises Suisse-Allemagne, y compris trains internes en Allemagne Trains EC Zürich – Bregenz – Lindau (- München)

Re 421.371-397

Alle Re 4/4" 11371 - 11397 wurden umgebaut, um sie auf den Netz der deutschen Bahn AG zuzulassen, und als Baureihe Re 421 neuimmatrikuliert.

Der Umbau umfasst:

Ersatz der Pantograph 2 durch ein Stromabnehmer Typ Schunck mit Wippenbreite 1950mm, bis Vmax 120 km/h zugelassen. Der Pantograph 1 bleibt ungeändert (Pantograph Typ BBC, Wippenbreite 1450mm, Vmax 140 km/h)
Anpassung am DBAG-Umgrenzungsprofil (schmaler als der SBB-Profil): entfernen der Handläufen um den Ecken des Führerständen, Ersatz der runden Greifstangen durch solche mit flachen Profil, Anpassungen an den Schienenräumer.
Einbau der Zugsicherungssystemen nach DBAG-Normen, Typen PZB (Indusi) und LZB
Einbau der DBAG-Zugfunk (Funkgerät AEG ZFM 21)
Entsprechende Änderungen an die Führerständen
Entgegen der anderen Loks der Baureihen Re 420 / 430, die Re 421 haben keine Führerstandsklimaanlagen (da es eine spezielle Zulassung für die Einsätze in Deutschland erfordert hätte)

Gewisse Re 421 wurden nicht sofort mit den DBAG-Stromabnehmer ausgerüstet, und waren dann ursprünglich nicht in Deutschland zugelassen (Siehe Bemerkung

in der Liste), zum Beispiel :

Re 421.371-397

The Re 4/4" 11371 - 11397 have been adapted to make them able to run on the lines of the German railways DBAG, and renumbered as type Re 421.

The modification consists of:

Replacing of the pantograph 2 through a pantograph type Schunck with 1950mm width, allowed up to Vmax 120 km/h. The pantograph 1 stays as it is (Pantograph type BBC, width 1450mm, Vmax 140 km/h)
Adaptation to the DBAG external vehicle profile (narrower than the SBB profile): removing of the handrails at the corners of the cabs, handrails with flat instead of round profile at the cab doors, size reduction of the snowploughs.
Fitting of the German train safety systems PZB (Indusi) and LZB
Fitting of the DBAG train radio system (Device type AEG ZFM 21)
Necessary modifications of the drivers posts
In contrary to the other engines type Re 420 / 430, the Re 421 are not fitted with air conditioning in the drivers cabs (as this would have required a special homologation for services in Germany)

Some Re 421 didn’t get immediately the DBAG pantograph, and were then initially not allowed to run in Germany (See the remark

in the list), for example:
