"Belle Isle Submarine Cable"
Announced 10 August 1900

The Canadian Government in Ottawa has recently announced that it
will be unable to lay the projected submarine telegraph cable to
Belle Isle. The Government has noted, without much objection,
that the Anglo-American Telegraph Company has a monopoly of cable
and telegraph rights in Newfoundland and its dependencies and
cannot circumvent their holdings. It has recently been suggested
that the Marconi System of Wireless Telegraphy might be more
useful, producing better results across the Atlantic Ocean than
the cable as it is easily damage during the winter months from
extremes in cold, ice, and icebergs.
